LifeMatters have noted the need for learners’ foundational maths skills to be improved and have therefore made this one of their areas of focus. In order to assist with the numeracy programme, each of our directors have chosen to spend some time, either weekly or bi-weekly, at a school close to our offices, tutoring a group of students in maths.
As Garth Watson (One of the directors) recently said “Malcolm Gladwell, in his bestseller ‘The Tipping Point’ has shown that any society in which fewer than 5% of the population are serving as role models will be in danger of becoming dysfunctional. That, regrettably, is the predicament in Steenberg, Westlake and other areas served by the Life Matters Foundation”.
Recently Life matters posted a video showing a panel discussion describing how important it is for South Africa to improve its numeracy skills at the primary school level.
